Answer first

Course captions need a review pass

A lesson can have perfect audio and still produce bad captions if the terminology is specialized. Auto captions give you the timing; the review pass is where you fix the terms students will search for. That matters for comprehension and for accessibility.

  • Fix technical terms and acronyms once, then search/replace repeats.
  • Check line length; students read while watching slides.
  • Add speaker labels if the lesson has multiple instructors.
  • Deliver SRT/VTT to the LMS; burn in only for previews.

Accessibility note

WCAG 1.2.2 expects accurate, synchronized captions for prerecorded video. Unreviewed machine captions are a draft. For public-sector or regulated courses, plan a human review for wording, timing, speaker identification and meaningful sounds.

Course caption questions

Are auto captions enough for a course?

They are a useful first pass, not a compliance guarantee. Review names, terminology, timing, speaker labels and meaningful sounds before publishing to learners.

What format should I give the LMS?

Most LMS and video players accept SRT or VTT. Export the file after review, and keep a plain TXT transcript if the platform supports a searchable transcript.

Can I caption a lesson for free?

Yes for videos up to 10 minutes, with a 720p watermarked video export. SRT/VTT/TXT downloads are free on every plan.
