How to add captions to TikTok
TikTok is watched on mute and mostly on a phone. The caption has to be short, high-contrast and out of the app UI's way.

TL;DR: Finish the edit, generate captions, fix the first three seconds and any names, set 9:16, keep one or two lines above the bottom UI, and export a captioned MP4.
1. Decide native or separate
TikTok’s built-in captions are convenient, but you do not get the same control over style, line breaks and reuse. A separate tool is useful when the clip is also going to Reels or Shorts and you want one consistent caption look.
2. Fix the hook first
Auto captions are most likely to be wrong on the first line, and the first line is the one that decides whether someone keeps watching. Review the first three seconds before anything else. Then search for names, product names and repeated phrases.
3. Set 9:16 and respect the UI
Keep the caption block above the bottom interface and away from the right-side action rail. Exact safe areas change with devices and app versions, so preview the export at phone size instead of trusting one fixed number.
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| One or two lines | Fast cuts leave little reading time. |
| High contrast | Busy footage eats thin text. |
| No face overlap | The subject is the visual hook. |
| No UI overlap | The app covers the bottom and right edge. |
4. Export and reuse
Export a 9:16 MP4 with captions burned in. Keep the SRT if you also publish to a platform that can toggle captions. The same clip can be uploaded to Reels and Shorts without recaptioning.
FAQ
Should I use TikTok native captions or a separate tool?
Native captions are free and fast, but styling and safe-zone control are limited. A separate caption tool is better when you want a consistent look, a reviewed transcript and a file you can reuse on other platforms.
What size should TikTok captions be?
The caption text should be readable on a phone at normal viewing distance. Keep one or two short lines visible, use a high-contrast background or outline, and keep the text away from the bottom UI and right-side buttons.
Can I reuse the same captions on Reels and Shorts?
Yes. Export a 9:16 captioned MP4, then upload it to each platform. If the platform supports SRT, keep the file for future edits.
